Do you set goals? Or do you have a goal to have no goals and have the single goal of enjoying life as it flows?
This post is for those who like to set goals and will like to achieve them.
A lot of people face issues with goal setting and mess up with the whole process due to the following reasons.
1. Not setting goals the right way and focusing on the wrong things.
2. Giving self a permission to fail at the beginning itself.
3. Setting goals for the purpose of setting goals.
4. Not being in complete alignment and harmony with the process of goal-setting.
So, let us discuss each of those points one at a time along with the remedy for the same.
Setting goals for the purpose of setting goals. Yes, people set goals for a purpose. However the purpose should not be because you have to set a goal. Rather the goal should serve you a purpose. If you set a goal because somebody told you to, you attended some goal setting program, because it is a new year, no, none of them is going to be as productive as when you set goals for your own purpose and you set them to achieve something. So, stop setting goals for others, for some follish reasons or for time pass, rather set them because you mean them, for the results you are going to achieve mean a lot to you.
Not setting goals the right way and focusing on the wrong things. Building on the above one, don’t set certain goals because you want something or you want to prove to someone. That way what will happen is, you will be setting the goals entirely for others and not for yourself. You may end up start focusing on what is urgent and not what is important and in that way may lose the entire track of your priorities and mess up with the goal setting process. Hence, along with setting your goals, also get your priorities right. This way, you are in a better position to focus on the right things.
Giving self a permission to fail at the beginning itself. The sincerity that you have to hit the goals is of utmost importance. It creates a great sense of self-esteem, self-confidence, etc. It also helps you build up on for a better life.
Yes, when you set big goals, larger-than-life goals, failure can happen wherein failure is not meeting your goals. However, even in those scenarios, you should not start with saying it is OK to fail, rather focus on having it all. Who knows, your commitment may bring in some unimaginable support which may make that goal true. So, true to the famous dialogue, ‘failure’ is not an option.
Not being in complete alignment and harmony with the process of goal-setting. Building up on all the above points. The first question to ask yourself is, are those goals yours? Are you setting them for yourself or for others? Will you be happy with the achievement of those goals? Are they in complete harmony in alignment with what are your top values and ethics of your life?
So, there they are, the time wasters of goal setting and also their solution to convert them to time savers and real goals.
Follow the above steps and you will gain more from your next goal and become a better individual having better results.
